Chapter 15 Problem 52TAE

Question

Which has the greater amount of internal energy: an iceberg or a cup of hot coffee? Defend your answer.

Solution

Step 1 of 2

Since the temperature of the cup of hot coffee is greater than the temperature of the iceberg. Due to the low temperature, the iceberg has low kinetic energy, whereas hot coffee has high kinetic energy (rotation and translation both) and has higher internal energy than the iceberg.
