Chapter 26 Problem 39P
Question
Problem 39P
Staphylococcus nuclease is an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of DNA.
The reaction is catalyzed by Ca2+ , Glu 43, and Arg 87. Propose a mechanism for this reaction. Recall that the nucleotides in DNA have phosphodiester linkages.
Solution
Solution 39P
In this exercise we’re told that Staphylococcus nuclease is an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of DNA. We’re told that the reaction is catalyzed by calcium (II) cation, Glu 43, and Arg 87, and are reminded that the nucleotides in DNA have phosphodiester linkages. Given the above information, we’re asked to propose a mechanism for this enzyme-catalyzed DNA hydrolysis reaction.
Each of the components has its own role to play.
