Chapter 10 Problem 44P

Question

Give the formula of an anion comprised of iodine and fluorine in which the iodine atom is \(s p^{3} d^{2}\)-hybridized.

Solution

Step 1 of 2

Iodine has been  hybridized.  hybrid orbitals are involved in  hybridisation, and each hybrid orbital must contain an electron pair.

So there are six electron pairs surrounding Iodine, and the anion has an octahedral arrangement due to the octahedral arrangement of orbitals.

In order for  to have a  hybridisation, we require  electron pairs around it.
