a. What product is obtained from the reaction of HCl with 1-butene? With 2-butene?

b. Which of the two reactions has the greater free energy of activation?

c. Which compound reacts more rapidly with HCl, (Z)-2-butene or (E)-2-butene?

Step 1

Here we have to write the product obtained from the reaction between HCl with 1-butene and 2-butene.

Reaction of HCl with 1-butene:-

The addition of hydrogen halide with alkene involves electrophilic substitution reaction. This reaction has been carried out by Markovnikov's rule. In this reaction 1-butene reacts with the electrophile H+ of HCl and form two intermediates i.e one is primary carbocation and the other is secondary carbocation. Than the cl- ion react with the primary carbocation to form 1-chlorobutane and similarly the secondary carbocation will form 2-chlorobutane as the product.

The reaction has been given below,

Reaction of HCl with 2-butene:-

The addition reaction between 2-butene and HCl has been carried out same as 1-butene and HCl and forem 2-chlorobutane. The reaction has been given below,

Thus 1-butene and 2-butene on reaction with HCl form 2-chlorobutane as the product.
