Chapter 1 Problem 84P

Question

Ricardo and Jane are standing under a tree in the middle of a pasture. An argument ensues, and they walk away in different directions. Ricardo walks 26.0 m in a direction 60.0o west of north. Jane walks 16.0 m in a direction 30.0o south of west. They then stop and turn to face each other. (a) What is the distance between them? (b) In what direction should Ricardo walk to go directly toward Jane?

Solution

Solution 84P Let us have a look at the following figure to understand the situation. Let us now calculate the x and y coordinates of Ricardo and Jane’s positions. Let they were initially at the origin. The x-component of Ricardo’s displacement = 26.0 m × cos 30 0 = 22.52 m The y-component of Ricardo’s displacement = 26.0 m × sin 30 0 = 13.0 m Therefore,
