Chapter 5 Problem 2P

Question

Problem 2P

If you stand next to a wall on a frictionless skateboard and push the wall with a force of 40 N, how hard does the wall push on you? If your mass is 80 kg, show that your acceleration is 0.5 m/s2.

Solution

Newton's third law states that  “Every action there is equal and opposite reaction “

The force exerted by the person is action force and the force exerted by wall on the person which is  reaction force.

So if you push the wall with a F=30 N, then the wall pushes back on you at 30 N in the opposite direction.
