Chapter 5 Problem 10E

Question

When you kick a football, what action and reaction forces are involved? Which force, if any, is greater?

Solution

Solution

Step 1 of 2

According to newton’s third law, for every action there is a reaction force which is equal in magnitude but opposite in direction.

Here in case of soccer, when we kick the ball, our foot will exert an action force on the ball; say ball to foot as action and the ball will in return exert a reaction force; say from ball to foot as reaction. This is similar to action reaction pair.
