Question
Problem 27E
In a tug-of-war between Sam and Maddy, each pulls on the rope with a force of 250 N. What is the tension in the rope? If both remain motionless, what horizontal force does each exert against the ground?
Solution
Solution
Step 1 of 2
What is the tension in the rope?
During tug-of-war, the tension in the rope is due to pulling force at two ends. As at each end, the pulling force is 250 N but they are in opposite direction,so the total tension on the rope will be due to this two pulling forces.
As they are in opposite in direction, the tension force at any point on the rope will be vector sum of two pulling force vectors,
As they are acting in opposite direction,
That is, T = 250N-250N= 0
Therefore, as the net force or the tension on the rope is zero, so the rope doesn't snap or move,(it is motionless).
