Chapter 16 Problem 7

Question

Two small charged spheres are 6.52 cm apart. They are moved, and the force each exerts on the other is found to have tripled. How far apart are they now?

Solution

Step 1 of 3

We are asked to find the distance between two charged spheres if the force between them is three times the force between the spheres when they were 6.52 cm apart

From Coulomb’s law:

Force between two charged particles is given as,

\(F=\frac{k q_{1} q_{2}}{r^{2}}\)

Where,

\(q_{1}\) and \(q_{2}\) are charges, and r the distance between them.

\(k=\frac{1}{4 \pi \epsilon_{o}}\) is the proportionality constant.
