Lone pairs

Electrons in an atom that are not involved in bonding are called lone pairs of electrons. They are a pair of non-bonding electrons and are considered similar to bond pairs for determining a compound's structure in VSEPR theory.

The repulsion between the lone pairs is higher than the bond pair repulsion as the bond pair electrons are held between the nuclei of two bonded atoms decreasing its spatial distribution.

The lone pairs in a molecule can be determined from its Lewis structure. The lone pairs are the electrons left in the valence shell after bond formation.
