Chapter 18 Problem 14E

Question

Everybody knows that warm air rises. So it might seem that the air temperature should be higher at the tops of mountains than clown below. But the opposite is most often the case. Why?

Solution

Step 1 of 2

At the top of the mountains, the air is thinner so less capacity to hold the heat. (Kinetic energy between molecules will be less). And as the height increases air does work and expands as it speeds up closer to the sun.
