Chapter 18 Problem 61TAE

Question

Could you cool a kitchen by leaving the refrigerator door open and closing the kitchen door and windows? Explain.

Solution

Step 1 of 2

When we leave the door of the refrigerator open, the heat absorbed by the refrigerator is again exhausted to the kitchen. The work done to extract the heat is also released in the kitchen in the form of heat energy. Thus the kitchen heats up rather than cooling.
