The MO energy diagram of cyclooctatetraene is unstable due to unstable electronic configuration. In the structure of cyclooctatetraene, the 1st three pairs of electrons are present in three bonding molecular orbitals and two electrons(electrons 7 and 8) are located in two different nonbonding orbitals. As like cyclobutadiene, it is a planar structure with diradical, which is particularly unstable electronic configuration.
