Chapter 4 Problem 156P

Question

Describe the laboratory preparation for the following gases:

(a) hydrogen,

(b) oxygen,

(c) carbon dioxide, and

(d) nitrogen. Indicate the physical states of the reactants and products in each case. [Hint:Nitrogen can be obtained by heating ammonium nitrite \(\left(\mathrm{NH}_4 \mathrm{NO}_2\right)\).]

Solution

Step 1 of 4

Here, we are going to explain the laboratory method of the following gases.

(a) Hydrogen,

In the laboratory, Hydrogen gas is obtained by using metals on acid. Dilute acid(\(H_2SO_4\) or HCl) is added to zinc (Zn) granules to prepare \(H_2\) gas.

\(H_2SO_4(aq) + Zn(s) \rightarrow ZnSO_4(aq) + H_2(g) \)
