(a) Without referring to Figure 4.11, give the oxidation numbers of the alkali and alkaline earth metals in their compounds. (b) Give the highest oxidation numbers that the Groups 3A7A elements can have.

Alkali metals (Li, Na, K , Rb, Cs and Fe) are the most active metals in the periodic table. They all react vigorously with water to form hydrogen gas.

The alkaline earth metals ( Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba and Ra) are the second most active metals in the periodic table. At room temperature , Ca, Sr, Ba and Ra vigorously react with and form hydrogen gas.
