Chapter 4 Problem 4.102

Question

Calcium oxalate (CaC2O4), the main component of kidney stones, is insoluble in water. For this reason it can be used to determine the amount of Ca21 ions in fluids such as blood. The calcium oxalate isolated from blood is dissolved in acid and titrated against a standardized KMnO4 solution, as shown in 4.99. In one test it is found that the calcium oxalate isolated from a 10.0-mL sample of blood requires 24.2 mL of 9.56 3 1024 M KMnO4 for titration. Calculate the number of milligrams of calcium per milliliter of blood.
