A four-wheel-drive car is accelerating forward from rest. Show the direction the car’s wheels turn and how this causes a friction force due to the pavement that accelerates the car forward.

Solution 4DQ Let us have a look at the following figure. The torque of the car engine imparts a force at the point where the tire is in contact with the road. The car will move forward only if this force exceeds the force of static friction. When there is no friction between the tire and the surface, the tire will only spin and hence the car will not move, When a friction is present on the surface, there will be a reaction force on the tire due to the surface and this will help in accelerating the tire forward.
