Chapter 2 Problem 2.18

Question

Identify the number of lone pairs in each of the following structures: (a) @ (b) ! (c) @ (d) O O @

Solution

Step 1 of 4

a. The easiest way to tackle these problems is to recognize patterns involving carbon. Here, it is dif?cut to use the four item shortcut since C-H bonds are omitted. In this case it is important to note that carbons do not have lone pairs unless they are carbenes (very rare) or if they are anionic. In this molecule, there is only one anionic carbon, so it will have one lone pair.
