Question
Predict the product(s) of the following reactions: Br ? (a) 1) HNO3, H2SO4 2) Zn, HCl 1) AlCl3, 2) Zn(Hg), HCl, heat Cl O ? (b) 1) CH3Cl, AlCl3 2) KMnO4, NaOH, heat 3) H3O ? (c) + 1) CH3Cl, AlCl3 (d) 2) Excess NBS ?
Solution
Step 1 of 7
(a) Reaction of the starting material with a mixture of nitric and sulfuric acids adds a nitro group to the ring. Both the bromine and methyl substituents are ortho, para directors. However, the atomic radius of the bromine atom makes ortho substitution next to the bromine less likely than ortho substitution next to the methyl group. This leads to a nitrated intermediate.
Treatment of this intermediate with zinc metal and hydrochloric acid reduces the nitro group into an amino functionality. The final product is a brominated aniline derivative.
