Chapter 2 Problem 36P

Question

Give the number of protons and electrons in each of the following common ions: \(\mathrm{K}^+,\mathrm{\ Mg}^{2+},\mathrm{\ Fe}^{3+},\mathrm{\ Br}^-,\mathrm{\ Mn}^{2+},\mathrm{\ C}^{4-},\ \mathrm{Cu}^{2+}\)

Solution

Step 1 of 9

Here, we are going to calculate the number of protons and electrons of the ions.

An ion is defined as an atom or a group of atoms which  has a net positive or negative charge.

When a neutral atoms loss of one or more electrons, it forms positive charged ion which is known as cation.

When a neutral atoms gain of one or more electrons, it forms negative charged ion which is known as anion.
