Chapter 2 Problem 4RC

Question

(a) What does \(\mathrm{S}_{8}\) signify? How does it differ from 8S?

(b) Determine the number of protons and electrons for the following ions:

      (a) \(\mathrm{P}^{3-}\)    and    (b) \(\mathrm{Ti}^{4+}\).

Solution

Step 1 of 4

Here, we are going to explain the difference from  to 8S.

is a molecule which is composed of eight sulfur atoms that are chemically bonded together.

In the   molecule, all the 8 atoms in the molecule moving together. The Lewis structure of   is given below:

Total valence electrons in  = 8 x 6 = 48

On the other hand, in 8S, there are eight S atoms present. Each S atom is different  from the other seven S atoms. Each S atom moves independently in a unit space.
