An ideal solvent does not react with the species involved in the reaction.

The solvent should dissolve the reactant species involved in the reaction.

Lower the , stronger is the acid.

In the given reaction the reactant methyl lithium  is highly basic and hence a protic solvent can’t be used.

Among the given solvents, the best aprotic solvent is diethyl ether hence the solvent that is compatible with reaction (a) is diethyl ether.
