Sulfur dioxide has a dipole moment of 1.60 D. Carbon dioxide has a dipole moment of zero, even though C - O bonds are more polar than S - O bonds. Explain this apparent contradiction.

In sulphur dioxide, the sulphur comprises six valence electrons and only one lone pair of electrons. Due to this sulphur dioxide does have a linear structure. In the carbon dioxide molecule, the central atom is sp hybridized and hence has a linear structure. The bond that forms between carbon and oxygen is polar.
