In the first SN-2 reaction, the oxygen of sodium ethoxide attacks as the nucleophile on the ethyl chloride, eliminating the chlorine leaving group and forming the product ethoxyethane.

In the second SN-2 reaction, the cyanide of sodium cyanide attacks as the nucleophile on the(bromomethyl)benzene, eliminating the bromine leaving group and forming the product 2-phenylacetonitril.
