Chapter 14 Problem 20E

Question

Problem 20E

What is the effect of a temperature change on a chemical reaction initially at equilibrium? How does the effect differ for an exothermic reaction compared to an endothermic one?

Solution

SolutionStep 1According to the Le Chatelier's principle, if the temperature of a system at equilibrium ischanged, the system should shift in a direction to counter that change. So. if the temperature isincreases, the reaction should shift in the direction that tends to decrease the temperature andvice versa.
