Chapter 5 Problem 78P

Question

Determine whether each acid is a binary acid or an oxyacid and name each acid. If the acid is an oxyacid, provide the name of the oxyanion.

(a) \(\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{CO}_{3}\) (aq)

(b) \(\mathrm{HC}_{2} \mathrm{H}_{3} \mathrm{O}_{2}\) (aq)

(c) \(\mathrm{H}_{3} \mathrm{PO}_{4}\) (aq)

(d) HCl(aq)

Solution

Solution 78P

Step 1:

Binary acids are molecules, which contain two elements; one element is hydrogen, and the other one is a nonmetal element, which is more electronegative than hydrogen. Therefore, binary acids can donate H+ ions in aqueous media. Examples for binary acids are HCl, HF, HBr, and H2S

An oxyacid is an acid that contains an oxygen atom bonded to a hydrogen atom and at least one other element. In these acids the acidity is determined by the electronegativity of the central atom and the number of oxygen atoms.
