Bonding theories are important because they allow to explain different chemical and physical compound’s properties such as the stoichiometry of the compound itself Step 2 of 3 Example Let’s try to consider the salt NaCl. The compound’s formula means that there is one atom of sodium (Na) and one atom of Chlorine (Cl). Since Sodium belongs to the group I A, it means that it has only one electron in the outer shell of its electronic configuration (its inner shells are completed), so this single electron is a reason of instability for this element. On the other side. Chlorine has seven electrons in the outer shell because it belong to group VII A. For the octet rule, an atom to be stable needs eight electrons in the outer shell to complete it, thus “resembling” noble gases’ electronic configuration that lie closer in the periodic table. For this reason, atoms tend to bond together. Thus Chlorine can “snatch” the electron in Sodium’s outer shell. On doing that, Chlorine completes its outer shell (resembling Argon’s electronic configuration) while Sodium, as an onion, loses the outer shell, showing the inner one (that is complete) thus resembling Neon’s electronic configuration. If there was another atom of Chlorine trying to complete its electronic configuration, it should do the same thing with another atom of Sodium atom because the first one has just reached its stability. Thus cannot exist a formula such as NaCl . 2
