Chapter 9 Problem 11E

Question

Problem 11E

What is the Born–Haber cycle? List each of the steps in the cycle and show how the cycle is used to calculate lattice energy.

Solution

Solution 11E Step 1 of 2 Born-Haber cycle takes in account a sequence of hypothetical steps involved in the formation of an ionic compound starting from its fundamental elements in gaseous form. In this cycle we are allowed to know the variation of enthalpy of each step except the last one. So if we apply the Hess law, the H for the unknown last step (the lattice energy) can be calculated.
