List the following gas-phase ion pairs in order of the quantity of energy released when they form from separated gas-phase ions. Start with the pair that releases the least energy. Na+F-, Mg2+F-, Na+O2-, Mg2+O2-, Al3+O2-.

Solution 109 E Step 1 of 1 Since we have ionic compounds, the energy released when gas phase ion pairs are formed is the same that lattice energy . Thus we there will exist a dependence from the coulombic energy of each compound and so there will exists a dependence by the product q x q 1 2 (where q an 1 are the 2arges of positive and negative ions) and by the distance between ions (thus a dependence of their radii) In NaF q x q = (+1) x (-1)= 1 (we are not considering the sign of the product, but only the 1 2 product of the amount of the charges) In MgF q 2 1 (+22x (-1)= 2 (we are not considering the sign of the product, but only the product of the amount of the charges) In Na O2 x q1= (+2 x (-2)= 2 (we are not considering the sign of the product, but only the product of the amount of the charges) In MgO q x 1 (+22x (-2)= 4 (we are not considering the sign of the product, but only the product of the amount of the charges) In Al O2q3 1 = (+32x (-2)= 6 (we are not considering the sign of the product, but only the product of the amount of the charges) Thus the Al O has the higher energy because of the higher charge product, the second energy 2 3 value is for MgO because of the same reason (product of charge), then there is MgF because its 2 ions have smaller radius respect to Na O (both MgF and2a O have the same 2 duct of 2 charges). The last compound, the one with smaller energy, is NaF because of both product of charges and ions’ radii
