PROBLEM 128P

Aerosol cans carry clear warnings against incineration because of the high pressures that can develop upon heating. Suppose a can contains a residual amount of gas at a pressure of 755 mm Hg and 25 °C. What would the pressure be if the can were heated to 1155 °C?

Solution 128P

Given that

Pressure P1=755 mm of Hg

Temperature T1=250C

Temperature T2=1155 0C

Pressure P2=?

We know that

Temperature must be converted to Kelvin

25°C + 273 = 298 K. and 1155°C + 273 = 1428 K

Temperature increase = 1428 - 298 = 1130 K.

1130K / 298 K x 755 mmHg = 2863 mmHg new pressure.
