Chapter 6 Problem 87P

Question

A compound containing nitrogen and oxygen is decomposed in the laboratory and produces 1.78 g of nitrogen and 4.05 g of oxygen. Calculate the empirical formula of the compound.

Solution

Solution 87P

Step 1:

In this question it has been given that, 1.78 g of nitrogen  and 4.05g of oxygen produced from the decomposition .

We have to calculate the empirical formula.

The empirical formula of a chemical compound is the simplest positive integer ratio of atoms present in a compound. A simple example of this concept is that the empirical formula of sulfur monoxide, or SO, would simply be SO, as is the empirical formula of disulfur dioxide, S2O2.
