Determine the concentration of NO3− in each aqueous solution. (Assume complete dissociation of each compound.)

(a) 0.10M KNO3

(b) 0.10M Ca(NO3)2

Answer :

           (a) 0.10M KNO3

            KNO3K+  + NO3 -

            (0.10 M KNO3) x (1 mol NO3 {-} / 1 mol KNO3) = 0.1 M NO3{-} .

              (b) 0.10M Ca(NO3)2

              formula unit of calcium nitrate, Ca(NO3)2, contains

               one mole of calcium cations, 1×Ca2+

              two moles of nitrate anions, 2×NO−3

              This means that every mole of calcium nitrate that dissociates in aqueous solution will                       produce one mole of calcium cations and two moles of nitrate anions

            Ca(NO3)2(aq)→Ca2+(aq)+2NO−3(aq)

             (0.10 M Ca(NO3)2)* (2 mol NO-3/ 1 mol of Ca(NO3)2)=0.2 M.

              (c) 0.10 M Cr(NO3)3

                 Cr(NO3)3Cr +3 +3 (NO3).

               (0.10  M Cr(NO3)3)*(3 mol  NO3 {-}/1 mol of Cr(NO3)3)= 0.3 M.
